Welcome Friends and Family,

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! My name is April Salas, and I am a senior at Valdosta State University. This summer, I have been offered a position as an intern by Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) and their “Into the Fields” program with the South Carolina Department of Education. I was selected to serve as a recruiter for ten weeks to reach approximately 400+ migrant children and their families that need educational assistance. The area that I have been assigned has little to no local programs in place to help migrant children and their families. To help offset the cost of my housing and utilities, etc., I am required to fundraise a minimum of $750, and am already over 1/3 of the way towards this goal thanks to the support of wonderful people like you!!!!

Why Intern with SAF?

By serving as a recruiting intern, I can help get a better estimate of how many people need our help and thus be able to help create outreach programs to help them with their education. My duties will consist of visiting migrant camps, fields, and communities to help find youth that can benefit from educational programs such as after-school organizations, summer camps, or other programs to ensure children and their families have the opportunity to succeed academically. I will also serve as a tutor to migrant students, a teacher to their families, and as a community organizer to arrange health fairs, workshops, english classes, etc.

Oftentimes, farmworkers and their families do not have the same opportunities or access to education due to their migratory nature. Children are constantly being moved from one school district to the next, and as a result do not receive a quality education. This coupled with the fact that the majority of migrant farmworker parents cannot read english puts migrant children at a major disadvantage.

Professional Development

I started to get involved in farmworker justice almost a year ago! Last summer, I helped host a summer camp at Valdosta State University for migrant children to help them with math, science, social studies, english, and other essential subjects. That was a real eye-opener for me, and I found myself wanting to become more involved. I am now a tutor for the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at Valdosta State University, and I want to keep looking for opportunities such as this internship that has been offered to me. Education is something that I have always wanted to go into, and I know that this opportunity will help me immensely. After graduation, I want to return to VSU to get my Master's Degree in Education, and then continue working with migrant students.

How can you help?

I am ready to take on the responsibilities that come with being a SAF intern. However, to be able to serve as an intern I am required to fundraise a minimum of $750 to help offset the costs of my housing, utilities, and transportation. To reach this fundraising goal, I require your help!  Please consider making a donation to my campaign today!
