Hello family, friends, and community,

My name is Alicia Mojarra and I have recently been selected to work with the Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) as an Into the Fields Intern this summer. I am very excited for this internship opportunity because I want to provide a helping hand to farm workers and gain knowledge of the issues that negatively affect them. In addition, I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to better myself as a person, by getting out of my comfort zone and working up the courage that will enable me to tackle different obstacles I may face in life. I can see that this is my opportunity to become educated in my beliefs and advocate for my passions.

I hold farm working close to my heart. At seventeen, my father immigrated here from Ahuacatlan, Nayarit Mexico with just the clothes on his back and the hopes of a better life. There isn’t a fruit my father hasn’t picked nor any weather condition he hasn’t labored through. My mother has made her living in the kitchen, selling anything from tamales to tacos to get us by. I am proud to say that despite the hardships, rejection, and humiliation they’ve experienced, they have never given up. They are the embodiment of resilience, and if there is anything they passed on to my siblings and I it is exactly that. We have worked alongside my parents our entire lives and pushed through every obstacle. As a child of undocumented parents I would be honored to show what I am capable of when it comes to my family.

I can’t imagine a greater feeling in the world than to be able to give back to my parents, and I know this internship will benefit my life and the lives of many others in multiple ways. My goal is to provide others with the same resources that I myself am grateful to have received. Also for this reason, I am majoring in Secondary Education at the University of Idaho. Therefore, this internship will help to prosper not only my professional career but my personal development as weIl. In North Carolina, I will be working at Sampson County Schools as a Migrant Education Program Assistant, reaching out to 180+ field/food processing workers and migrant youth. My tasks will consist of providing outreach to farm workers, recruiting for programs, tutoring migrant youth, teaching english classes to adult farmworkers, conducting health education, organizing events, and interpreting. I am so excited for this once in a lifetime opportunity and I would not be able to do it without your help and donations!

Buen dia familia, amigos y comunidad,

Mi nombre es Alicia Mojarra y recientemente fui seleccionada para trabajar con la Acción Estudiantil con Agricultores (SAF) este verano. Estoy muy entusiasmado con esta oportunidad porque quiero ayudar a los trabajadores agrícolas y conocer los problemas que los afectan negativamente. Además, me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para mejorarme como persona, y desarollar el valor que me permitirá enfrentar los diferentes obstáculos que pueda enfrentar en la vida. Puedo ver que esta es mi oportunidad de educarme en mis creencias y abogar por mis pasiones.

La vida del campo la llevo cerca de mi corazón. A los diecisiete años, mi padre inmigró aquí desde Ahuacatlán, Nayarit, México, con solo la ropa que llevaba puesta y las esperanzas de una vida mejor. No hay una fruta que mi padre no haya recogido ni ninguna condición climática por la que no haya trabajado. Mi madre se ha ganado la vida en la cocina, vendiendo cualquier cosa, desde tamales hasta tacos para salir adenlante. Me enorgullece decir que a pesar de las dificultades, el rechazo y las humillaciónes que han experimentado, nunca se dieron por vencidos. Son la definicion de la resiliencia, y si hay algo que transmiten a mis hermanos y yo es exactamente eso. Hemos trabajado junto a mis padres durante toda nuestra vida y hemos superado todos los obstáculos. Como hija de padres indocumentados, me sentiré honrada de mostrar de lo que soy capaz cuando se trata de mi familia.

No puedo imaginar un sentimiento más grande en el mundo que poder devolverle a mis padres todo lo que an echo por mi, y sé que esta oportunidad beneficiará mi vida y la de muchos mas. Mi objetivo es proporcionar a los demás, los mismos recursos que yo misma estoy agradecida de haber recibido. También por esta razón, me estoy especializando en Educación Secundaria en la Universidad de Idaho. Por lo tanto, esta pasantía ayudará a prosperar no solo mi carrera profesional, sino también mi desarrollo personal. En Carolina del Norte, trabajaré en las Escuelas del Condado de Sampson como Asistente del Programa de Educación Migrante, llegando a  ayddar más de 180 trabajadores de procesamiento de alimentos / campo y jóvenes migrantes. Mis tareas consistirán en brindar asistencia a los trabajadores agrícolas, reclutar para programas, dar clases particulares a jóvenes migrantes, dar clases de inglés a trabajadores agrícolas adultos, impartir educación sobre salud, organizar eventos e interpretar. Estoy muy emocionado por esta oportunidad única en la vida y ¡no podría hacerlo sin su ayuda y donaciones!

Student Action with Farmworkers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each other’s lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change.

SAF works with farmworkers, students, and advocates in the Carolinas and nationwide to create a more just agricultural system. Since 1992, we have engaged thousands of students, farmworker youth, and community members in the farmworker movement.
