Who is SAF?

SAF stands for Student Action with Farmworkers. It is a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each other’s lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change.

I was recently accepted into a health research fellowship with SAF, and I will be in Atkinson, North Carolina from June-October! There I will be doing community outreach with Black River Health Services. Some of the things I'm excited for is improving my Spanish through translation, supporting community events, co-leading a theater group for young people, working in mobile clinics and being a part of the change that I want to see in this country. 

Quick Facts

1. There are more than 3 million migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the U.S.
2. The highest farmwoker populations are in California, Texas, Washington, Florida, Oregon, and North Carolina (where I will be!) 
3. The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 originally excluded all farmworkers, and was amended in 1978 to mandate minimum wage for workers on large farms only (average income for a farmworker is $11,000; for a family is is approximately $16,000) 
4. Agriculture is consistently ranked as one of the three most dangerous occupations in the U.S. yet only 10% of farmworkers have employer provided health insurance.

Why should YOU support SAF?

1) Do you know where your food comes from? If you love fresh foods, this is a wonderful way to support the community who grows, and harvests your food through an organization that dedicated to working with farmworkers. SAF is dedicated to ensuring that farmworkers have dignity in their work and livlihood. 

2) Your donation will be tax-deductible! 

3) SAF has been around for over 25 years! They're an established organization that has engaged thousands of students, farmworker youth, and community members within the farmworker movement. Together we're raising awareness around farmworking, building strong relationships, resist the injustices and reflect on the meaning of their work.

4) This way you can support not only farmworkers, but students of migrant families or like myself who are figuring out their place in this lucha (fight) for justice while gaining experiences through fellowships and internships. Through SAF, we can grow our personal skills and knowledge and continue to apply them after our participation in this program.
