In 2008, I had the wonderful opportunity to work as an intern with Student Action with Farmworkers. This internship was much more than a way to gain professional experience and beef up my resume. SAF's Into the Fields Internship taught me that my interests and skills and desire to help others could go along with a career. SAF introduced me to dozens of people fighting for social change, along with a very special group of young people who shared values and ideals, my fellow SAFistas.
Through internships, fellowships, a youth group, and student organizing school, SAF trains a diverse group of young people, bringing together students from immigrant and farmworker backgrounds with students native to the Southern US, to address problems experienced by migrant and seasonal farmworkers. SAF encourages critical thought and community action about social and economic injustices facing farmworkers. SAF’s programs not only develop young people as leaders in their communities, they also provide thousands of Latino farmworker families with greater access to education, health care, legal services and resourcesin their new US home. The activities students undertake while active with SAF foster a life-long commitment to advocacy and organizing in support of social and economic justice.
