Support Farmworker Justice – Help Me Raise Funds For This Cause!
Dear friends, family, mentors, and community,
Hello! Thank you for taking time to open up this page. My name is Marjory Ignacio, and I am a student at Emory University, majoring in English/History and Sustainability Studies. I am also a native of Raleigh, North Carolina.
This summer, I have the privilege of working as an intern with Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF), an organization based in my home state. Student Action with Farmworkers is a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting students and farmworkers to build solidarity, understanding, and justice for the farm working community.
To learn more about SAF click here.
I will work with farmworker communities in the Carolinas, many of who are immigrants or come from low-income backgrounds, to support youth empowerment, labor rights, food justice, and community education. This opportunity is not just about what I’ll learn, but how I can give back.
Although I myself am not from a farmworker community, the work that SAF does is valuable to me. I grew up surrounded by a community of hard-working immigrants and day laborers. I have seen first hand what limited access to public services like healthcare, fair pay, and labor rights protection can do to vulnerable communities. On the same note, I have seen the impact of people coming together to achieve a goal and the strength in community.
SAF also empowers children within these communities to work towards their educational and career goals. I personally know what access to education and financial resources can do for families and communities. I am the first in my family to attend a four-year university, and much of that is due to the community support I have received throughout my education. I believe it is my duty and honor to continue that legacy of support that I have received through my work with SAF this summer.
We are living through uncertain times. That means that now, more than ever, we must work together as a community to work against injustices for vulnerable communities such as the farmworker communities in North Carolina. These are the moments when we must lean into our empathy, find strength in each other, and work together. There is power in numbers, and through collective support, education, and action, we can create awareness and movement.
That is why I am reaching out to my community for support in this journey. My goal is to raise $750 by Friday, June 27. I only ask that you give what you can, or share this page with others who may be interested! Your donation and support will help SAF and I continue supporting farmworker advocacy and awareness. Thank you for your support!
