Are you interested in learning about the farmworker justice movement and finding a way to personally contribute to the creation of a more socially just agricultural system? If so, you have come to the right place!

My name is Emma Lawlor, and I am a May 2011 graduate of Wake Forest University. Beginning in June 2012, I will be working as a Sowing Seeds for Change fellow for Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF). Based in North Carolina, SAF has been training students on and raising awareness about farmworker issues for twenty years. During my six months as fellow for SAF, I will be working at the NC Farmworkers Project in Benson, NC as a health outreach worker. I will provide health education, case management, and interpretation for farmworkers living nearby, as well as, advocate for improved living and working conditions. Not only will my work provide an unparalleled real-world introduction to the realities faced by workers and their families in the fields and agricultural labors camps of NC, but SAF will also provide trainings and support throughout the course of the fellowship.

Throughout college, I pursued a deep interest in the questions that surround diet, food policy, and agriculture. I am extremely excited to have the chance to continue my education by working with SAF and to give back to the farmworkers whose contributions are so overlooked by our society. Only by educating myself and those around me about the injustices of our food system will its terrible ironies ever begin to be reversed.
