Hello friends and thank you for visiting my fundraising page!

Over the next month, I will be fundraising for Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF), a non-profit organization that connects students and migrant farmworkers in North Carolina to work toward social change. I would really appreciate your help in reaching my $650 fundraising goal!

My interest in migrant farmworker justice stems from my study abroad experiences in South America, my minor in Latin American Studies, my desire to better know where my food comes from, and my goal to become more involved in the process of food production (the reason I became a vegetarian three years ago).

I’ve been shocked to learn that migrant farmworkers cultivate 85% of North Carolina’s fruits and vegetables—contributing $1.8 billion to the state’s economy—but do not have basic access to health care, safe and affordable housing, and legal representation. The majority of NC’s migrant farmworkers live in poverty, are excluded from minimum wage laws, and are denied overtime wages, workman’s compensation, employment benefits, and access to social services. Half cannot afford sufficient food for themselves and their families. I cannot believe that for so long I have purchased food without knowing anything about the people behind its production and the unfair conditions in which they live and work!

Starting in June, I will be addressing some of these injustices by working with farmworkers to help provide them health services as one of SAF’s Sowing Seeds for Change fellows. I am so impressed with Student Action with Farmworkers and excited to begin serving as a fellow, and because of this, I am asking you—my friends and family—to help  support SAF’s amazing work.

Please donate now! I appreciate any contribution you can make- and remember, all donations are tax deductible!!

Thank you,

Mackenzie
