My name is Cecelia Del Corazon Hinek. I come from Chicano roots in Los Angeles, California and San Antonio, Texas, but grew up in North Carolina. Throughout my upbringing in the region, I have been made increasingly aware of the marginalization of minority communities in the Southeast. I've worked on the coast of North Carolina with peers from around the world, and with children from all walks of life. The work experience exposed me to the range of lifestyles that are possible in the country, from the economically elite to the students sponsored by the state. Later, I lived in Costa Rica, where wealthy tourists are the lifeblood of the developing economy. This drove home the point that inequality is not simply a domestic issue, but one which affects all countries.
Global economic instability causes farmworkers and their families to immigrate to the United States in search of opportunity, only to find themselves reduced to statistics or trapped in the migrant stream. This summer, I will be working with the SAF internship program to help farmworkers find justice in the agricultural system, to ensure that their rights are respected, to spread awareness of the frequently abused farmworker population and to bring small communities together as part of an increasingly international society.
Student Action with Farmworkers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each other’s lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change.
